Welcome to our first Stone Ranch Foundation blog post on our newly updated website.
While chaperoning a recent 3rd grade field trip, the parents had a fun discussion about our upcoming Spring Fling Dinner and Auction on March 25, 2017 at The Farmer and The Seahorse. From our chat, we created the following “Frequently Asked Questions”.
“What is the Spring Fling? Is it a carnival? A family event? Couples only?”
The Spring Fling is our annual spring adults-only fundraiser for the Stone Ranch Foundation. It’s a night out including a silent auction, sit-down dinner and a live auction. This is a fun way for parents, friends and staff to enjoy some social time, while also supporting our school. In its third year, Spring Fling was born from a “merger” of the winter mom’s night out and the spring golf tournament, but is not a ‘couples only’ event. Bring a spouse, a date, a friend, or meet new and old Stone Ranch friends there. For the second year, we are hosting the evening at The Farmer and The Seahorse in the Torrey Pines area. We love this venue, as it provides a special atmosphere for a “night out”, while remaining a casual enough environment that we can relax with our friends and neighbors.
Well, our committee originally started discussing this topic by saying “anything but flip flops”, but hey, this is San Diego, and many of us have pick up the kids flip flops, run to the beach flip flops, dressy flip flops and all the other in between flip flops, so we settled upon “dressy casual.” Wear what makes you comfortable for a night out for dinner. Suits and jackets are not required, but a portion of the evening is outdoors, and there may be some walking/standing on artificial turf. Like many nights in San Diego, there will be a range of outfits. Some of us use the night as an excuse for a new dress, and others of us use it as a chance to wear that favorite outfit we have in the closet. And by all means – if you want to bring out your dressy flip flops, this is the night for it! Whatever we’re all wearing, the night will be a fun one!
“But what will we do for fun?”
The night starts at 5:30 with a cocktail hour and silent auction, until about 7:00 (the actual timeline will be posted on our Foundation Facebook page a few days before the event). You can mingle with friends, outbid your neighbor on a custom painted Beanbag Toss game, or even play beanbag toss on the turf with your arch nemesis (aka best buddy or maybe next door neighbor).
We will have a fun video photo booth taking advantage of the Airstream Trailer right in the middle of the restaurant!
From there, we will continue into the dining room for a seated dinner followed by our live auction and dessert. There will be music and dancing while winning bidders check out and receive their auction items before the night wraps up around 9:30.
“How much are tickets, and what is included in the ticket price?”
The tickets are $75 per person ($150 for a pair with shared bid number). We also invite all of our Stone Ranch Teachers to attend as guests of the Foundation and would love your help offsetting that cost. So whether or not you attend, please consider being a Teacher Ticket Sponsor for $50.
The ticket price includes appetizers and a seated dinner with dessert (unless you’re the lucky bidder in our dessert auction). As we get closer to the event, we will post the menu online and on our Facebook page. There is also a cash bar with cocktails, beer, wine and soda. The Farmer and the Seahorse also creates a special “Aqua del Dia” which is a refreshing non-alcoholic drink using fresh fruits and herbs for a festive option.
“Dessert Auction? What’s that? And speaking of auction, I heard there were beach cruisers last year. What’s the hot ticket item this year?”
Ooh, the dessert auction…how much would you pay to enjoy a delicious dessert with your table while the rest of the guests have to wait til the very end of all the long speeches and live auction? Rumor has it one dad paid $300 for a cheesecake two years ago! And once again, we will have a couple of unique desserts kicking off the live auction, and enjoyed while the rest of the room drools.
There won’t be beach cruisers this year, but the auction will not disappoint. Did you know that each of the classrooms contributes a basket or package toward the auction? The packages are being wrapped and cataloged as we speak, but here’s a sneak peek: did you read above? We’ve got a Beanbag Toss (aka Cornhole) game that will be customized for the winning bidder! Another class has donated a wine fridge that will be filled with bottles of wine to get your home cellar going. There is a tower of games that is taller than quite a few 5th graders, and while the kids are home playing games with the babysitter or grandparents, the parents could enjoy a night away at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, complete with golf or spa, and dinner for two.
The live auction promises to have some fan-favorites returning – like Principal for a Day, front row parking for the 2017-18 school year, and tickets to “check off a bucket-list item” at a Green Bay Packer game at Lambeau Field.
